"600 km in ten weeks" - the journey of the ghost net continues

From North Atlantic to North Sea - and to where then?

The distance covered by the fishing net and the starting and end point, 10.2.-10.3.2022

The spring equinox is less than a week away, and we have returned to North Sea to find out, where our ghost fishing net has ended up since we last had it in our focus in middle of February. Last time the net had crossed the Greenwich meridian from west to east and was heading towards the North Sea oil and gas fields. The net did not get tangled into any of these rigs in the area, it managed to pass them and has continued on a slightly southeastern course towards the coast of Norway. The currents have been moderate, the net has covered about 220 km in the past 4 weeks and is about 180 km away from where we left it last time. The net is now about 100 km out to the sea from coast of Norway, roughly to the west from Egersund. Should the net stay on this course, it might avoid hitting the shoreline of southwestern Norway and actually drift towards Skagerrak. Still, it is possible that the net would gather some lift from northbound currents, which could push it towards the shore around southwestern coast of Norway, or push it further to the north.

We’ll return to this case in bit over 3 weeks. On Friday we will head again to the Baltic Sea to find out where our cigarette butts have drifted in the meantime…
